From the CARMA site I entered all the zip codes in Delaware County and downloaded the data set of power plants locations for each company servicing Delaware, for which there was data.
These companies include:
Columbus Southern Power (Owned by American Electric Power)
Ohio Power Co. (Owned by AEP)
Columbus Public Utilities
Duke Energy
First Energy
Dayton Power and Light Inc.
Unfortunately, I do not have data on which power plants are Nuclear, Solar, Wind, Coal or Garbage incinerators.
I made a different datasheet for each company, formatted the files and imported them into ArcGIS. About 3 points had to be removed because they were planned projects or old facilities, or otherwise had no coordinates. It took some tweaking with the files to get everything to work properly, some had to be imported multiple times to get everything to work. I don’t know the problems, other than Excel being buggy saving the files from .csv to .dbf and ArcGIS being buggy importing them.
After I got all the data together, I found that some of these power companies owned facilities in California and Europe– unlikely places to supply Delaware. Using the Definition Query I restricted the datasets to show data points only within the range of the midwest, generally.
Then, I pulled up a United States map showing all counties and used the Select by Attributes tool to select only the states with power plants and create a new layer from those. I did the same with Delaware County, forming a new layer so that Delaware would be a different color, highlighting our geographic location and providing reference.
