Power Plants Map Update April 28, 2008

Filed under: Project — nataliegarnet @ 12:23 pm

From the CARMA site I entered all the zip codes in Delaware County and downloaded the data set of power plants locations for each company servicing Delaware, for which there was data.

These companies include:

Columbus Southern Power (Owned by American Electric Power)
Ohio Power Co. (Owned by AEP)
Columbus Public Utilities
Duke Energy
First Energy
Dayton Power and Light Inc.

Unfortunately, I do not have data on which power plants are Nuclear, Solar, Wind, Coal or Garbage incinerators.

I made a different datasheet for each company, formatted the files and imported them into ArcGIS. About 3 points had to be removed because they were planned projects or old facilities, or otherwise had no coordinates. It took some tweaking with the files to get everything to work properly, some had to be imported multiple times to get everything to work. I don’t know the problems, other than Excel being buggy saving the files from .csv to .dbf and ArcGIS being buggy importing them.

After I got all the data together, I found that some of these power companies owned facilities in California and Europe– unlikely places to supply Delaware. Using the Definition Query I restricted the datasets to show data points only within the range of the midwest, generally.

Then, I pulled up a United States map showing all counties and used the Select by Attributes tool to select only the states with power plants and create a new layer from those. I did the same with Delaware County, forming a new layer so that Delaware would be a different color, highlighting our geographic location and providing reference.

Power Plants Map April 22, 2008

Power Plants location data coming from CARMA

Data can be located by 3 terms: individual plants, companies, locations

The most useful data for us will be searching for all Ohio plants, but mapping all the power plants owned by the companies servicing the different zips of Delaware County would be best, provided I can make the data work.

Data from the site comes in CSV format and can usually be downloaded after going to a “Get More Information” page, which is a small hard to find link. The link on the sidebar only gives summary statistics, NOT plant locations and data.

CSV data is easily imported and takes minimal formatting. However, ArcGIS has some problems with it along the various steps:

1. Importing X,Y Coordinate data ( Import > X,Y Data )
Excel rounds the coordinate data to the whole, so the coordinate data when imported into ArcGIS is wrong. This is solved in Excel by formatting the Lat/Long columns as Numerical with 4 decimal places.

2. No X,Y Data
3 entries do not have X,Y Coordinate data. Instead of deleting these entries I looked them up.
I noticed one entry is a “power plant” producing 2MWh, which seemed like too small amount. The plant also had no CO2 emissions and no year 2000 record. Upon visiting the web site for the company that owned it, the news sections mentioned a solar power research facility. Maybe this is it?
So, I found the location (maybe), went into Google Earth and entered in the Lat and Long. Hopefully it works.

Crude Starter Map:

Plans: I can look up power companies servicing Delaware by zip codes. I plan to look up and map the power plants owned by the companies operating in Delaware.

Couldn’t get the report generator to work on my laptop, but it seems very useful. I will complete that part of 8 in the lab.

So, 8 and 9 complete. Should be useful for Airpollution

I didn’t know the difference between joins and relates.

Getting to Know ArcGIS Ch. 3-7

Was a little tedious, but I got a little more in depth with some software details than I did in 353. I hadn’t used ArcCatalog before, or gone into so much depth with the labeling details.
